About
Hello friends and fellow fish friends,
My name is Sammy. I'm originally from Toronto, but I moved to the island five years ago after the passing of my father. That shift marked the beginning of a deeper journey — one to reconnect with the ocean and earn my commercial diving license.
During that time, every spare weekend was spent in the water, surfboard under my feet. After completing my occupational scuba diver course, I moved to Tofino full-time and dove deeper into the life of a surfer. Diving has always been the heartbeat of my soul. I’ve been in the water for over a decade, both as a recreational diver and free-diver.
Over the years, I began to see the natural connection between free-diving, surfing, and yoga. All three share a common thread: connecting the mind and body through breath. That connection brings confidence, relaxation, and presence — both in the ocean and in life.
Tofino Surf and Flow was born from this insight. My goal is to offer a new path to yoga in Tofino — one that’s deeply integrated with the ocean. Whether you're a high-level surfer looking to improve breath-hold, shoulder mobility, and spine flexibility, or a newer surfer hoping to build confidence in the waves, you're in the right place.
I know the ocean can be intimidating. Waves can stir the same feelings as anxiety: the fight-or-flight response, the washing-machine tumble, the short, panicked breath. Surfing teaches us how to move through that with grace — and that translates directly to life.
I’m a certified yoga and breathwork teacher (YTT-500hr), a surf instructor with Surf Sister, and I hold my ILS (International Life Saving) certification along with standard first-aid. My approach is rooted in experience, safety, and deep love for the sea.
I would also love to share my favorite radiance sutra with you. Translated by Lorin Roche and coming from the Upanishads (an ancient text).
Sutra 106:
"Set your mind free to wander anywhere it wants,
Think any thought,
Ride any wave, surge in any direction.
The instant a thought springs up,
Abandon it and move on.
Don't let the mind rest anywhere.
In this wat, gain entry to the bliss.
Of the silent depths beneath the surf."
